Group seeks prom dress donations for ‘Cinderella’ event

Ah, spring is, well, not quite in the air, but prom season is. And with costs creeping up and up, the South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division is asking the public to help local belles get to the ball.

For the 11th year, the statewide group of lawyers is holding a Cinderella Project boutique event, which gives high school students who might otherwise be unable to afford a prom dress the chance to find one for free. But the group needs donations, says Anne Marie Hempy, a lawyer with Collins Lacy and a coordinator of the local Cinderella Project.

And with the average prom dress now costing between $100 and $300, the need this year is greater than ever.

Since about 2009 our numbers have increased, Hempy says. And I would say that is in direct correlation to the economy.

The boutique sale includes a range of donated, gently used dresses, shoes and accessories that students can browse through and take home, just like at any other store. But everything at the special boutique is free. Girls need only show a valid student ID to shop, Hempy says.

Youd be surprised, Hempy says, at the impact a prom dress can have.

Prom is a highlight of your youth, I think. We just want to help in areas where other people arent helping and hopefully do some good in the community where we live and work.

This year, the boutique sale will be held March 3 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, but organizers are still in need of donations. Primary needs include gently used or new formal dresses, shoes, jewelry, wraps and handbags.

Just think, says Hempy, the unworn gown thats been hanging in the closet for three years can have a huge impact on a young womans life

And I think if you had interviewed anyone in the general public, they likely would be able to recall their junior or senior prom, who their date was, and they might even remember what they wore, Hempy says. So because we all have such fond memories of those times, its something that wed like to help make possible for other young women.

Donations will be accepted through Feb. 27 at Collins Lacy, 37 Villa Road, Suite 500; SavVy, 1803 Augusta St.; Talbots, 1125 Woodruff Road; and Smith Poe, 634B Fairview Road in Simpsonville.

We may be losing brain cells simply by watching the Jersey Shore maniacs on a weekly basis, but thats certainly not stopping us. Were also not deterred by the fact that only lasting storylines seem to be Mikes obsession with proving Snooki hooked up with him and the bromantic ballad of Vinny and Pauly D. And as luck (or cruel, cruel fate) would have it, those two storylines are also the only ones that never seem to change. Every week, Mike brings the Unit around and threatens to expose Snooki but it never happens. And you know what, Mike? We no longer care. Luckily, there were a few other choice moments to help ease the journey through all-too familiar territory.
Snooki Gets Her UTI Drunk
Though Snooks would rather take her morning to punch Mike in the face, she ultimately decides going to the doctor to treat that pesky UTI (the one that forced her to pee her pants). Theres just one big problem: shes not supposed to drink on antibiotics. The doctor says she can get away with one, so naturally, she starts the night with birthday shots and proceeds to order an IV drip of Long Island Iced teas. Its a wonder shes not always sick.

In the last few seconds of the episode, some grabby drunk guy starts touching Jenni like hes got some sort of death wish can he not see that Roger is huge? And over-protective? Needless to say, Jennis lack of a dress soon gets Roger into hot water and for the conclusion of this brawl, well have to wait until next week.

Chunky, gold chain necklaces and heels with gold filigree details were nice additions, as were luxe crocodile mini-attache cases and doctors bags.

For evening, theres nothing more chic than the combination of black-and-gold — agold-embroidered, cable-knit cardigan over black pants, for example; a blackbias-cutgown with ropes of crystal beading like jewelry down the back, worn with heels with gold filigree details;or a black-and-goldostrich feather cape.

If only Downton Abbey actually looked this good.

A fashion graduate who studied in Kent has been given his own window display at a top department store in London.

Alex Mattsson, 27, from Sweden, graduated from the University for the Creative Arts in Rochester in 2007.

His collection is being showcased in the Oxford Street windows of Selfridges after he was named one of Selfridges Bright Young Things for 2012.

Donna Ives, Associate Dean of Fashion at the university, said millions of people would see his designs.

Huge boost

Mr Mattsson said he felt very privileged to have won such an amazing talent project.

The publicity has already given me a huge boost – just days after I was announced a winner, I had a double-page spread in The Metro, which really shows the scale of this project and the potential benefits involved, he said.

His creations will be on show until the end of February.

Fashion designers who trained at the UCA campuses in Kent and Surrey include Karen Millen and Zandra Rhodes.

Rihanna has signed up to make her first television show. The concept: burgeoning fashion talents compete to dress the star.

The pop superstar, who has had international success with her chart-topping music, will oversee the TV talent hunt to discover a new fashion designer. Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts will host.

The We Found Love singer, whose revealing outfits have come under fire in the past from critics who claim her clothes are too overtly sexual for her young fans, will take on the title of Executive Producer for the show, which will air on Britains Sky Living network.

A statement on the channels website says:

The show will celebrate the extraordinary talent and creativity in the British fashion scene. With Rihanna, a fashion icon herself, and Nicola, who created her own Dainty Doll make-up range, at the helm, the show will recognise the increasing influence popstars have on mainstream trends.

Rihanna will be heavily involved in the casting and the winner of the program will get to design a stage outfit for Rihannas Wireless performance in Londons Hyde Park in July 2012.

Rihanna tells Sky Living, Ive always had a great love of fashion. Its a constant source of inspiration in my life, and is a big reason why Ive grown into the person and artist I am today.

Nicola called Rihanna one of her style icons, adding: I was so flattered when Rihanna asked me to work with her on this show. Im so excited for us to get started on finding a new up-and-coming British designer who just needs a chance, a little bit of help in getting their skills noticed.

Rihannas move into TV comes shortly after she made her big screen debut alongside Liam Neeson in Peter Bergs new film Battleship.

The series will come exclusively to the UKs Sky Living HD in summer 2012. As for viewing it here in the US of A.? Were guessing there might be some Youtube involved… no word yet on whether the show will jump to an American network.

One girl wowed the judge with her voluminous ballerina skirt of pink and white tissue paper, which she had attached to a glittering corset cut from a plastic tablecloth and accented with rhinestones and ribbons.

This is the best prom dress ever! I want that! laughed an enthusiastic Michelle Prior, who was there from San Franciscos Fashion Institute of Design amp; Merchandising to choose the winning entries. Weeks has the five dozen students in her beginning and advanced sewing courses use paper and tape so they can experiment on the cheap instead of going through bolts of fabric.
